Komodo island is located in the Nusa Tenggara Islands.The island is relatively small in size, just twenty-two miles long and twelve miles wide and since Komodo is close to the equator the island is always very hot. The weather on Komodo Island is very dry except when the monsoon winds bring in heavy rains from December to March. Ancient maps would mark this island by writing “Beware! Here Be Dragons!” to warn explorers of the giant lizards that lived there.

This island is include in the Komodo National Country Park managed by the Government.Located in the west side of Sumbawa Island and separated by Sape channel.
On 2008 there,have around 1200 Komodo.If added with other island like Rinca island,totally there are around 2500 Komodo.That was a huge number,because in the Komodo island, The Komodo grow very settled.

Beside Komodo,this island also retain the exotic flora like Sepang trees ( sterculia oblongata).It can use to coloring the textile,and also a drug,and the interesting part is the grain can be eaten and it like pea pod nut.

There are indications that the Komodo Islands were joined to their eastern neighbors about 20,000 years ago due to global changes in sea levels during the Pleistocene Ice Age. It is possible that the dragons were found throughout Indonesia but only those on Komodo survived unharmed. Fossils of stegadons, pygmy elephants about the size of water buffalo, have also been found on these islands and the mainland. It is possible that these were the ancient dragon’s prey, although prey species similar to the modern day deer and wild boar may also have been present..

Komodo dragons are the world’s heaviest living lizards. They can grow to a length of 10 feet (over 3 meters), with an average length of 8 feet (2.5 meters) and weight of 200 lbs (91 kg.). Females are usually under 8 feet and weigh about 150 lbs. (68 kg.).

There is a stable population of about 3,000 to 5,000 Komodo dragons on the islands of Komodo, Gila Motang, Rinca, and Flores. However, a dearth of egg-laying females, poaching, human encroachment, and natural disasters has driven the species to endangered status..

Komodo dragons are endangered due in part to their limited range. It would appear that they have been hunted (legally and illegally) over the years, but not to the extent of decimating the population. Komodo National Park, established in 1980, and strict anti-poaching laws have helped protect the dragons, although illegal activity still takes place. Villagers sometimes poison carrion bait to reduce the population, much like ranchers of the American West poison sheep carcasses to rid the area of coyotes and mountain lions…

Komodo

Komodo is one of the 17,508 islands that make up the Republic of Indonesia. The island has a surface area of 390 km² and over 2000 inhabitants. The inhabitants of the island are descendants of former convicts who were exiled to the island and who have mixed themselves with the Bugis from Sulawesi. The population are primarily adherents of Islam but there are also Christian and Hindu minorities.

The Komodo National Park is a national park in Indonesia located near the Lesser Sunda Islands in the border region between the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara. The park includes the three larger islands Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller ones, and a total area of 1817 km² (603 km² of it land). The national park was founded in 1980 in order to protect the Komodo dragon. Later it was dedicated to protecting other species, including marine species. The islands of the national park are of volcanic origin. About 4000 people live within the park. In 1991 the national park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taman Nasional Komodo (TNK) dibentuk pada tahun 1980 dan dinyatakan sebagai World Heritage Site serta Man and Biosphere Reserve oleh UNESCO pada tahun 1986. Semula kawasan tersebut ditetapkan untuk melestarikan satwa Komodo yang unik. Satwa Komodo pertama kali ditemukan oleh dunia ilmu pengetahuan tahun 1911. Kurator Museum Zoologi di Bogor, P.A. Ouwens, menerima laporan ditemukannya satwa komodo oleh J.K.H. Van Steyn, pegawai pemerintah Hindia Belanda.Ouwens memberi nama ilmiah Varanus Komodoensis Ouwens kepada satwa tersebut dalam karya tulis yang dimuat dalam “Bulletin du Jardin Botanique de Buitenzorg”, dengan judul “On a large Varanus species from the island of Komodo.”
